FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is your writing process like?
Typically, I write from the character’s perspective. The characters are always eager to tell their stories – consequently (so far) I don’t suffer from writer’s block.
How long did you write before you published?
I was able to write five novels (the Fleck trilogy; the first and second Corinth novels) before publishing my first Fleck novel. I enjoy the advantage of having a full series written before publishing.
Do you have any peeves?
I tend to write in four- to six-hour blocks. I do not like being distracted when I am in the flow of writing. I need to catch the words as they come – interruptions hinder the flow.
When a new character arrives on-page I find it frustrating to have to stop and think of a name. I keep a list of names and take the next on the list.
I learned—through the editing process—that I tend not to use contractions (when I should).
What advice do you have for writers?
I cannot over-stress how important it is to be kind to yourself. I like the quote “Suaviter in Modo, Fortiter in re” (Gentle in Manner, Firm in Action) which helps me to move forward despite challenges. When a critic finds fault in your writing, be especially kind to yourself and accept that they are not your audience. Serve your audience – not your critics.
What does literary success look like to you?
Success for me is finding my audience. I look forward to connecting with my readers (across the world) through the characters in my stories.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
Some books take six to eight months, others are quicker. Magic in the Shale was written in three months.
