Suaviter in Modo,
Fortiter in re
While watching a show one sunny afternoon, I was introduced to the quip “Suaviter in Modo, Fortiter in re” (Gentle in Manner, Firm in Action). The words were incorporated into a large stained glass window on an elegant stone staircase. I paused the show to Google the meaning of the words. It’s intriguing how a small moment – a flash of a scene – can so completely capture a person’s attention – even at a glance.
The quip has become a bit of a maxim for me. I think what attracts me most to the motto is that it suggests strength can be something ‘other’ – something more powerful than a burst of temper, a show of power or a demand to be heeded. It’s akin to the question; which is stronger water or rock? Rock can be a crushing force – yet – even a gentle constant steam of water will erode rock.
I share this maxim with you in hope that it may comfort and encourage you as it has strengthened me to move confidently forward – despite obstacles.
